That’s why at All Terrain UK, we live by a Green Laning Code of Conduct — a set of principles that helps protect the trails, the land, and the reputation of our community.
Here’s what every green laner should follow.
🧭 1. Only Use Legal Routes
Sounds obvious — but it’s crucial. If you’re not 100% sure a lane is legal for motor vehicles, don’t drive it.
✅ Stick to:
- Byways Open to All Traffic (BOATs)
- Unclassified County Roads (UCRs)
- Permissive routes with clear vehicle access
❌ Avoid:
- Footpaths
- Bridleways
- Restricted byways
- Private land without permission

🐑 2. Respect the Countryside and Its People
You’re a guest in someone else’s backyard. Be mindful of:
- Farm animals and wildlife — slow down and give them space
- Farmers and landowners — always be polite and courteous
- Walkers, cyclists and horse riders — pass carefully, slowly, and with a smile
If someone’s not happy to see you, don’t escalate — educate, if you can, or move on respectfully.
🚗 3. Drive With Care and Skill
Green laning isn’t a race — it’s about exploring safely and responsibly.
- Keep speeds low (5–15 mph is plenty)
- Avoid spinning wheels or churning up muddy sections
- Don’t attempt routes beyond your skill level or vehicle capabilities
- Use recovery gear properly and only when necessary
A bit of prep goes a long way — and helps protect the lanes for everyone.
🚯 4. Leave No Trace
Take only photos, leave only tyre tracks — and even then, try to keep those light.
- Take litter home
- Avoid creating new tracks or widening the trail
- Don’t drive on overly wet or damaged routes — it can cause long-term harm
- If you open a gate, close it behind you
Good green laners make it look like we were never there. That’s the goal.

You can help by:
- Reporting blocked or damaged lanes
- Volunteering on lane maintenance days
