What is a BOAT in Green Laning? Understanding Byways Open to All Traffic

If you’re just getting into green laning, you’ve probably heard the term BOAT thrown around — and no, we’re not talking about anything that floats. 🛥️

In the world of off-roading and countryside exploring, BOAT stands for Byway Open to All Traffic — and if you drive a 4×4, motorbike, or any off-road vehicle, this is one of the most important acronyms you’ll come across.

🚜 What is a BOAT?

A BOAT is a public right of way that’s legally open to all types of traffic, including motor vehicles. While they might look like overgrown tracks or muddy trails, they carry the same legal status as regular roads — with one major difference: they’re mostly unsurfaced and not maintained for everyday traffic.

You’ll usually find them in rural areas, weaving through fields, woodlands, or old historic routes — perfect for a bit of off-road fun, as long as it’s done responsibly.

📍 How Are BOATs Marked?

BOATs are typically marked on Ordnance Survey maps with a series of red crosses ( + + + ) and might be signposted on the ground with “Byway” signs.

But don’t rely on physical signs alone — they’re not always updated. That’s why at All Terrain UK, we give our members tools to find accurate, up-to-date BOAT routes across the country.

❓ How is a BOAT Different from Other Rights of Way?

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • BOAT (Byway Open to All Traffic): You can walk, ride, cycle, and drive a vehicle legally.
  • Restricted Byway: Walk, ride, cycle, and horse-drawn vehicles only — no motors.
  • Bridleway: Walk, cycle, and horse ride — again, no motor vehicles allowed.
  • Footpath: Walkers only.

Only BOATs and certain Unclassified County Roads (UCRs) are legal for 4x4s and trail bikes.

🛑 Can BOATs Be Closed?

Yes — and that’s why we’re here. BOATs can be temporarily or permanently closed through Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) or seasonal restrictions.

We keep our members informed with closure alerts, map updates, and council communications — because getting halfway down a trail and hitting a locked gate is no one’s idea of a good time.

✅ Why BOATs Matter for Green Laners

BOATs are the lifeblood of green laning. They let us legally explore some of the UK’s most stunning landscapes, from rocky mountain trails to hidden woodland paths.

At All Terrain UK, we champion access through education — showing people how to use these rights of way safely, legally, and with respect for the land and its users.
